A Walk Around Newport Wetlands, Goldcliff & Nash
I recently joined the Friends of the Brecon Beacons group who arrange regular guided walks throughout South Wales. The first walk I did with them on 12 December was a 6 mile walk around the Newport Wetland Centre, Goldciff and Nash. Photos taken on Ilford HP5 with a Minolta Dynax 7 and Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8.

British Camp, Malvern Hills
On Tuesday 4 November I attended a Member-Led Walk with the RPS Landscape Group led by Nick Browne ARPS to British Camp, an Iron Age Hill Fort on the top of Herefordshire Beacon, one of the highest peaks of the Malvern Hills. The weather wasn’t the best with grey skies, but there were still fabulous…

Surf Horse
On my usual morning walk today there was a horse being ridden on the beach so I took some photos with my Minolta Dynax 7 and Minolta 200mm f/2.8 on Ilford HP5. Both rider and horse were perfect for B&W photography! I developed the film in Mytol 1:1, ‘scanned’ the photos with a Sony A99ii…

Darktable
I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for many years to edit film scans and digital photos. Up until 2½ years ago I was using Lightroom 4.1 and Photoshop Elements, neither of which required a subscription. Then in November 2023 I bought a one-year licence for their 20Gb Plan, which included Lightroom Classic and Photoshop,…

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2018
I’ve taken photos of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta before, shooting mass ascents from near the Observatory above Clifton Suspension Bridge but I’d never been to the actual event in Ashton Court. So last Thursday (9 August) was my first time. I had my Hasselblad H1, three lenses and a lightweight tripod. I particularly wanted to get…

Isle of Fire 2018
Photos from the Isle of Fire at Barry Island on Saturday 21 July 2018. Normally I’d take these on 35mm, usually with an Olympus OM-4ti loaded with Precisa for the flames, and another 35mm camera loaded with fast negative film, such as Superia 800. This time I had the H1 loaded with Provia 100F pushed…

Agfa APX 100
I was fortunate to be given a couple of rolls of Agfa APX 100 (thank you Nils!) and put one of the rolls through the H1. It’s the original APX, expired 2009. Love how these turned out.

War Time Bridgend
Photos from a Wartime Bridgend event on 16 June 2018. For this kind of even it’s great to be able to take my Agfa Isolette. It’s not quite war time, manufactured around 1950, but it’s close and is certainly very much like the cameras that would have been used in the 1940s. And Tri-X is…

Isle of Fire, Barry 22-23 August
Barry Island was once again host to the ‘Isle of Fire’ with fire displays, fire jugglers and giant illuminated lobsters. A night-time event like this isn’t the easiest to shoot on film, but it is certainly possible. I used two cameras, an OM4 loaded with Kodak Portra 800 for the ‘ambient’ scenes, and an OM-4ti loaded…

Cardiff Bay with Delta 400
I had an hour to kill in Cardiff Bay recently and decided to run a test roll of Ilford Delta 400 through my Olympus 35DC rangefinder. I don’t know why I haven’t tried Delta 400 before. I developed the roll in Xtol 1:1, which is also new to me, and I’m quite impressed with the…

Remembrance Sunday Bridgend 2016
Remembrance Sunday in Bridgend was a bright sunny November day, just perfect for the Olympus OM-4ti and Agfa CT Precisa transparency film. I also had the Yashica T3 loaded with Agfa Vista 200 (Poundland film). Thanks to the Royal British Legion for organising the day.

Romeo and Juliet in the Park
On Wednesday 27 July I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Taking Flight Theatre Company in Parc Calon Lan in Blaengarw. As described on their web site: It’s Verona 1963 and it’s the annual college Boat Race, the high society courtship event for the rich, beautiful and perfectly coiffed.…

Hasselblad film no 174
Fresh out of the developing tank yesterday evening and scanned today, the 174th roll I’ve put through my Hasselblad. Although actually I’m on my third body – I started with a 500C/M, then a 501C and now a 503CX, but it feels like the same camera, possibly because the lenses, film backs and prism have…

My favourite films
My favourite film/developer combinations change on an on-going basis so this is just a snapshot of my favourites at the moment. 35mm black and white I really like Tri-X developed in D76, but the film I use most is Ilford XP2 developed in Rodinal. XP2 is supposed to be developed in C41 chemicals, but I…
